Sosin Gallery
Georgette
Sosin's art
has an an
expansive nature. It's a sense that the works are alive,
stretching to break out of their frames and connect with one another
as a single continuous composition.
Though she's been painting and sculpting since the mid-1950s, Sosin
recently has been combining varying mixes
of acrylics, pastels, ink, and Japanese rice paper
to blend
imagery of the cosmos with the rich
textures, saturated
colors and abstractions
of bones. Sosin's
combination of bones and planets makes sense both compositionally
and philosophically.
" The bones are a symbol of a life that's already returned
to energy," she says. "There's a spiritual aspect to it.
The body is transformed to energy, and that energy is a positive
force. It makes me very conscious of the oneness of our life on
the planet and the cosmos. We're not separate from the sun, the
moon, and the galaxies. That, to me, is sacred."

SPOTLIGHT BY MARY ABBE
The Minneapolis Star Tribune, Sunday, October 3, 2004
Celebrating
the Universe
OPENS TODAY: Minneapolis' Georgette Sosin finds inspiration
for her stately paintings of cosmic forces in new scientific theories
and discoveries. She transforms relics of ancient times –
fossils, rocks, shells, bones – into symbols with intensely
personal resonance and turns to physics, biology and astronomy
for fresh ideas. Her meticulously rendered images feature moons
and whirlwinds, planets rolling through the heavens like celestial
bowling balls, and ghostly figures such as the ' Moon Juggler'
in this whimsical design. Her new show includes triptychs celebrating
sacred visions. (Reception 1-5 p.m. today, free. Sosin Studio
Gallery, 1231 Washington St. NE., and 13th Av. NE., Mpls. Through
Oct. 30, free. 612-378-0581.)
